Ma’ot Chittim, also known as “kimcha d’pischa,” refers to the obligation upon every Jew to donate funds prior to Pesach to help the poor cover their holiday expenses. Pesach is not only the festival of freedom; it is also intended to impart to every person a sense of royalty. As such, efforts must be made to ensure that even the poor can experience this feeling. It is for this reason that Pesach is the only holiday which merits a charity collection dedicated entirely to it. On most other holidays, we are encouraged to invite those less fortunate to eat their holiday meals in our home. On Pesach, however, one should ensure that every Jew has the means and ability to experience their own seder in their own home.
As Jewish communities in the Greater Washington area continue to grow, so have the number of families and individuals needing assistance. As a volunteer staffed organization, every dollar donated translates into direct assistance. Please consider making a donation of any amount.
